Part 0?
Since we’re writing a series about creating our Ai mosaic, I felt it appropriate to explain why we’re making this particular mosaic. It’s not a random choice to create a new mosaic of the Chinese character Ai.
We’re parents – both genetic and adoptive parents. And we love and support the agency through which we adopted five embryos (one of whom is now crawling around our house, after having 22 months to grow, another has passed away, and three more are waiting for their chance to live our their lives).

Generations Adoptions, a division of Nightlight Christian Adoptions, has their annual fundraiser gala coming up, and we wanted to create something appropriate to donate as part of the silent auction.
At its heart, adoption ought to be motivated by love for the one being adopted. Birth parents and genetic parents make adoption plans for their children because they love them. Adoptive families adopt children out of love, and a desire to provide what the children need to thrive. And we learn about what adoption means from God’s example. His love shows us how we in turn ought to love, and it’s expressed by adopting us as heirs in his kingdom. So Ai, the Chinese character translated as “love” in English, seemed an appropriate subject for this particular event.
Here’s a picture of the finished project:
