Oh, yes. Make your own custom colored DIY Phone Stand out of LEGO elements!

Every now and then, I have an opportunity to join in a discussion that is held online via one of these video chat services. Until now, I’ve just propped my phone or the kindle fire up on the table or counter with books, water bottles and whatever else was available. And then, it struck me… why not make a phone stand? I searched for a DIY Phone Stand but none of what I found was something I could just make out of what I had, or was something I thought would last all that long. Then, a second thought struck me… why not make one out of LEGO?
The Styles of my DIY Phone Stand
I found 3 different styles that would suit my needs.
- 1. The simple style.

I used a 6×6 plate, with a stack of 2×6 bricks in the back. A combination of 2×4 bricks, 2×2 bricks and 1×2 bricks make for the most stable arrangement with seam lines staggered (so there isn’t one seam all the way up). I found leaving a 3 stud width allowed for a nice angle of the phone, so a 1×4 brick holds the front. Of course, I sought to color corrdinate. This one is in lime green and green.
- 2. The kindle fire needed its own design.

The Kindle is perched on a 4×8 plate with bricks making an area of 4×6 in the back. With the extra height and weight of the kindle fire, the back needed more umph or it would flop. Again, a 3 stud space seems to give a very nice angle to the kindle for doing a video chat.
- 3. And when you need to have your phone plugged in.

This idea came to me the next day. What if I needed to plug in my phone while having a video chat? My original design wouldn’t allow for this. So, I played with the bricks some more. The 1×12 bricks along the middle do not have to have the holes, but my first idea was to use lift arms for this and Technic pins. Alas, our LEGO bag didn’t have these parts readily available. So I went with simple plates and bricks. Again, a 3 stud space gives a nice angle!
Designs Abound!
The real joy of using LEGO is that I’m not stuck with these designs. I can improve them, I could abandon them, I could keep them as is. When I’m done with them, the plates and bricks go back into the bag for use in some other idea.
